Spanish unemployment hits record

Expresiones y Palabras

---------------------------------
Unemployment in Spain, despite the fact it was predicted to go up further, and this is confirmation of that, essentially.  This is the national office of statistics and its their survey of the active working population, here in Spain, essentially a quarter of people who are essentially part of that active working population are now out of work, 6.6million people in total, and if you look, worryingly in the first quarter of this year another 374,000 people went out of work feeding into that perception that Spain is in a downward spiral.  It went into recession,  officially at the beginning of the week and overnight that news from Standard & Poor, the credit rating agency, that its credit worthiness has been downgrade by a few noches.

Despite the best efforts at austerity on the part of the government, both local and national across the country Tom, what is going wrong with the economy?

Spain has two or three fundamental problems.  It has a huge amount of private debt and, a lot of that debt is held by the Spanish banks, a fall out, essentially form the housing crisis.  You may remember that Spain up to 2008 built huge amounts of property and public infrastructure projects across the country and when the housing market collapsed in 2008 a lot of the banks were left with a lot of bad debt.  The other problem is unemployment, of course and then there is the lack of growth which, of course is linked to unemployment.  If people aren’t in a job, they have less money and they are spending less in the economy, so the perception is, and we have seen this from the markets recently that if you look at the rate of borrowing that the government is paying on its debt and the fear is that Spain economy is not growing, its is going to contract this year and probably the next, and the perception is that Spain I really struggling to get itself moving again. The real fear is when the economy can grow again in the near future.

If you have unemployment running at this kind of percentage Tom, is Spain moving to a tipping point, because of you have 1 in 4 people long term unemployed because of the public sector jobs and the building jobs no longer exist can Spain afford to keep these people in benefits, keep the social service aspect afloat?

The other really interesting thing to point out Peter, is that Spain, recently the government announced a very austere budget, huge cuts to public services and tax increases and those measures have not really taken effect yet, and so if you can imagine we are in this situation now, nearly 1in 4 of those are looking for a job, unable to get one, a lot of other fundamental problems within the economy.  If you then wind the clock on a few months and start thinking that these measures of austerity that the government is going to put in place means that the government is going to be spending less money, investing less in public services things are not going to be tougher for people socially, there is going to be a lot of controversy over health measures announced recently, people are going to have to pay more for medicine, students are going to have to pay more to go to university, class sizes are having to go up, there a lots of measures that are going to hurt people but the overall fear is really, that this overall austerity is going to feed into the lack of growth in the economy.  You have, sort of a perfect storm for the Spanish Economy. Of course the Spanish are hoping that these austerity measures will create confidence in the markets that it will get its budget deficit in order and then it will bring in  other measures to try and generate growth within the economy.

In tough situations, unplug and wait

In tough situations, unplug and wait.

When a project or meeting gets difficult, it can be tempting to power through to try to get it over with. But it's better to do the same you might do for a slow-moving computer: shut it off and wait a minute.

Give yourself the opportunity to regain your composure. In a meeting that's going nowhere? Take a break. Not making headway on that proposal you need to write? Take a walk. During the break, don't think of new strategies or arguments. By taking yourself out of the situation, you allow your brain to rest so that when you return—with a fresh perspective and a calm mind—you are more likely to find a new solution

Primero, conócete a mismo. Buscas para ‘Big Five Personality Traits’ on Wikipedia.

Are Successful People Nice?

Since Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence, we've recognized the importance of tuning into social and emotional factors in the workplace. But in business, only the strong survive.

Using earnings data, the researchers, Timothy Judge, Beth Livingston, and Charlice Hurst found that men who rank high in agreeableness make substantially less than men who are less agreeable - as high as $10,000 per year.

Conversely, women's earnings were less affected.

Career advancement often requires a willingness to ruffle feathers from time to time

So, what can you do?

First, get to know yourself. Take a quiz that measures the Big Five Personality Dimensions.  Search for ‘Big Five Personality Traits’ on wikipedia.

If you are more agreeable, go out of your way to find the flaws in plans that you hear. It helps to imagine that the idea is from another company, to help separate the people from the ideas.

If you are more disagreeable, balance criticism with empathy. Remember that it is difficult to hear criticism of your ideas and your performance.

A strong leader can guide without being mean.

Nice or not, without a doubt you can still be a great leader — you just have to adjust your strategy

The American who quit money to live in a cave

Expresiones y Palabras
Second look - reexaminar
Roadkill - animales atropellados
Dumpsters - Basura
Blows people away - pasmado
Enlightened - iluminado

---------------------------------
In the first year of the 21 century a man standing on a highway in the middle so America pulled from his socket his life savings, $30, laid it inside a phone booth and walked away.
You know, I had known Daniel for 20 years before he gave up money and when he did give it up, about 10 years ago, I heard about it and thought he was crazy, he said money was really an illusion, and I didn’t believe that.

In 2008 though, after the economy collapsed and money just disappeared, that we thought we had I started to give him a second look, and I wondered maybe he has a point because if your house was worth 500,000 one day and only 300,000 the next day, what happened to the that 200,000? What was that money in the first place?

Public debt rose to 8, 10 finally 13 trillion dollars, he did not pay taxes or accept food stamps or welfare, nor any other form of government handout.  Instead he set up house in caves in the Utah canyon ways, where he forages mulberries and wild onions, scavengers for road kill raccoons and squirrels, pulls expired groceries from dumpsters and is often fed by friends and strangers.  He writes My Philosophy is to use only take what is freely given, what is discarded or what is already present and running.  And that is what drew me to Daniel, because here is someone who maybe does know what the solution is but I am going to disobey.

So basically all three of these movements, left, right and centre have come to the conclusion that our financial system is a big problem.  It’s so big we can’t control it and there are so many ways in which we feel enslaved by it.  Worse we feel powerless to change it, and then Daniel comes along and says, ‘Hey, you don’t have to be part of the system, I have proven it, that you can survive and live abundantly for 12 years without using any money’.  And that just blows people away and inspires them, and that inspires me which is the reason I wrote this book.

The fact is, if everyone lived like the average American the world would actual collapse much more quickly than if everyone lived like Suelo, but when Suelo comes along, why do we always say ‘Hey if everyone lived like you this wouldn’t work’.

We can cultivate, freely giving and freely receiving no matter what stage of life we are in, that’s our true nature that exists in everybody.

This is a book about a guy who chose to live like a myth, chose to live like the heroes of the bible, and that interests me and, of course the desert is the perfect place for that because that is where religions are born.  I think for Daniel the story is already in it, he found a way to live which was meaningful, that felt like a way he could live with his heart, with his beliefs and he could find happiness.

But he not just sitting on a hill becoming enlightened, he is really engaging in the world, and he wants to get his message across.  He says, ‘he never imagined going to live in a cave but he does imagine that money will become obsolete.

Culture eats Strategy for Lunch

Culture is a balanced blend of human psychology, attitudes, actions, and beliefs that combined create serious momentum or miserable stagnation.

A strong culture flourishes with a clear set of values and norms that actively guide the operations of the company.

Employees are actively and passionately engaged in the business, operating from a sense of confidence and empowerment rather than navigating their days through miserably extensive procedures and mind-numbing bureaucracy. paralyzing

Performance-oriented cultures possess statistically better financial growth, with high employee involvement, strong internal communication, and an acceptance of a healthy level of risk-taking in order to achieve new levels of innovation.

The three don’ts of persuasion

The three don’ts of persuasion

Persuading people to believe in your idea is a critical leadership skill. But too many managers don't know how. Here are three things to try next time you need to gain consensus or secure a deal:

Don't make the hard sell. Setting out a strong position at the start gives opponents something to fight. It's better to present your position with reserve, so you can adjust it if needed.

Don't resist compromise. Compromise is not surrender. People want to see that you are flexible enough to respond to their concerns and incorporate their perspectives.

Don't assume it's a one-shot deal. Persuasion is a process. You'll rarely arrive at a solution on the first try. Listen, test your position, and then refine it based on the group's input.

Greek town develops bartering system without euro

Expresiones y Palabras
Wander down – Caminar
Grass Roots – Nivel de la comunidad
Glimmer of hope - optimismo
A rare hint of colour - optimismo
---------------------------------
Wander down to Valos market and there is one thing you won’t need in your pocket, money.  From handicrafts to food everything for sale here is through TEM, a new alternative currency.  Locals build up credit by offering goods or services and the value is recorded in a central computer network allowing them to spend their TEM on anything they choose, however exotic.  A traditional bartering system returning to today’s Greece.

Its not easy to exchange money, so its great to exchange with what I can offer.

We have reached the bottom of our lives, now we want to think in a different way.

Since it began this network has build up over 800 members and its growing every day, a grass roots initiative for people struggling to afford things with Euros, and its created? Other bartering and exchange systems around the country, as Greeks look for new ways to beat the financial crisis.

Its thrown this picturesque little place into the spotlight.  Volos is suffering like many Greek cities, industry collapsing and unemployment soaring.  The alternative currency has re-energised a community searching for a glimmer of hope.  The mayor has backed the currency but thinks that the two currencies can co-exist.
We think that it is a very good way out to the deep economic and social crisis.  Its an initiative that compliments the euro but does not replace the euro.

But it is gaining pace, this is one of the local businesses now using the network a local cooperative that is now selling plants through TEM giving fresh opportunities to the workers.

We can buy bread and meat for exchange for our products, she said and the girls can go the hairdresser.  I grew up in a village and this is how is used to work in the old days before money was involved.

The next generation is benefitting too.  Parents who can no longer afford these workshops for the children can now pay in part with TEM.  The euro may not be forced out here but there is now an alternative that many are depending.  A simple idea, that is giving this community fresh optimism, a rare hint of colour amongst the darkness of the financial crisis.
Mark Lowen, BBC News, Volos, Central Greece.
